Abstract The talk describes a “taster” session for postgraduate science students in the use of virtual worlds for collaborative endeavour. The session, themed on tuberculosis, brought together a number of traditional and innovative practices. Working in small groups, students were tasked with scavenging for information and rezzing tools, the two being used in the shared construction of both meaning and the virtual environment while learning the basics of inventory, navigation and communication. Circumstances meant that the session ran in OpenSim rather than Second Life as originally intended and the talk compares the affordances of the two environments for this particular class.
