Title Virtual World Support for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract This presentation describes the development and ongoing work of a support group within the virtual world of Second Life for caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease. Progression of the group including development of the partnership between the co-leaders, is discussed. Content and media for group meetings are described; these include discussion of video shown in-world, presentations about recent developments related to Alzheimer's disease (the Shriver Report and the National Alzheimer's Project Act), and an exhibit of mixed reality artists’ perspectives on Alzheimer's. The presentation also focuses upon and invites audience comment about issues that arose during discussions and future possibilities for expansion to bring together those with Alzheimer's, their caregivers, the health and human service professionals who serve them, and policy makers.
Bio(s): Susan Toth-Cohen: Dr. Toth-Cohen is Professor, Department of Occupational Therapy, Jefferson School of Health Professions in Philadelphia and Director, Occupational Therapy Doctoral program. She also directs the Garden of Healthy Aging and the Occupational Therapy Center at Jefferson in Second Life.C
